we used to design a website with following layout: header above plus a menu in or below it, the next is the contents along side the sidebar and the last is footer. From this layout then the designers are going to be creative with the typography, color, javascript, etc. But now more designers use a different web layout, like one page scrolling content, wide layout with various sizes boxes for the content, hand drawn content, and many more.
